Aswan High Dam, Temple of Philae and the Unfinished Obelisk

Explore Aswan and discover her most popular sites on this guided tour to the High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and the alluring Temple of Philae, set on its own island in the Nile.

Your day starts with a visit to the magnificent Aswan High Dam. Although it was constructed several millennia after the majority of Egypt’s iconic landmarks, the High Dam is equally as impressive. A miracle of modern engineering, the dam is 364 feet high and spans for over two miles and contains eighteen times the material used to build the Great Pyramid of Cheops. Once, the largest rock-filled dam in the world, today the dam provides irrigation and electricity for the whole of Egypt.

From here, you continue to the Unfinished Obelisk. Much of the granite used for Egypt’s temples was quarried in Aswan and in the Northern Quarry you will find an unfinished obelisk that has remained in situ ever since a crack was discovered as it was hewn from the rock. Possibly intended as a companion to the Lateran Obelisk that once stood proud at Karnak, if completed the obelisk would have been the largest piece of stone ever handled.

Your tour concludes with a visit to the beautiful Temple of Philae. Dismantled and reassembled on higher ground after the completion of the Aswan High Dam threatened its existence, the temple is dedicated to the goddess Isis and is set on its own island. The temple is widely regarded as the prettiest in Egypt.

Abu Simbel by Road from Aswan

Undoubtedly the highlight of any visit to Egypt, the iconic Temple of Abu Simbel, guarded by four gigantic statues is the most impressive legacy of Ramses II, the greatest ruler of ancient Egypt.

An early morning start, takes you on a three hour drive through scorched desert and around Lake Nasser. However, the long drive is well rewarded as you arrive at the spectacular Temples of Abu Simbel. The two temples were cut directly into a mountainside and the entrance to the main temple is marked by four colossal statues of Ramses II. The interior has been intricately decorated with hieroglyphics depicting the great victories of ancient Egypt’s greatest king and at certain times of the year the whole interior of the temple is illuminated by the rising sun. The second Temple of Nefertiti was dedicated to Ramses II favourite wife and is fronted by two statues of the queen and four statues of Ramses himself.

Abu Simbel is undoubtedly an historic treasure, but the site also represents a feat of modern engineering. When the construction of the Aswan High Dam and Lake Nasser threatened the Temples, UNESCO co-ordinated a rescue effort that saw both Temples dismantled and and re-constructed in the exact same relationship to each other and most importantly the sun.

Abu Simbel by Air from Aswan

Perhaps the most impressive temple in the whole of Egypt, the colossal temple of Abu Simbel was cut into solid rock and simply has to be seen to be believed.

Not only are the stunning Temples of Abu Simbel considered among the most magnificent monuments in the world, the removal from their original site and reconstruction above the flood waters of Lake Nasser was an historic event in itself. In an impressive feat of modern engineering, the temples were re-located to higher ground to prevent submersion in Lake Nasser at the completion of the Aswan High Dam.

The entrance to the main temple is marked by four gigantic statues of Ramses II and the intricately decorated walls inside the temple depict the great victories of ancient Egypt’s greatest king. The smaller temple is dedicated to Ramses II favourite wife, Nefertiti and is fronted by two statues of the queen and four statues of Ramses himself.

The early morning flight from Aswan will save you at least 4 hours as the drive to Abu Simbel is around three hours each way. Your tour does not include a guide although you can join one of the many official guided tours at the temple or explore the site at your own leisure.
